Ethics and Independence

Ownership

Guerrilla News is owned and operated by Guerrilla.News, Inc., a nonprofit charitable organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. No corporation, political party, campaign or government agency owns any part of us. Our News Director and Editor in Chief is Lee Durbin and our Chief Investigative Journalist is Ronald E. Durbin II. See About us.

Guerrilla News is an independent, nonprofit newsroom covering Oklahoma government, courts, police and public money. We answer to readers, not to advertisers, donors or the officials we cover.

How we report

  • We build stories on public records, court filings, recordings and named sources wherever we can, and we link the documents so readers can check our work.
  • We give the people and agencies we write about a fair chance to respond before we publish, and we include their response.
  • We label opinion and analysis as opinion and analysis.
  • Arrests are accusations. Our Jail Tracker shows booking information as public records, and everyone listed is presumed innocent.

Money and independence

  • Donors and sponsors do not see stories before publication and do not decide what we cover. Guerrilla Publishing, LLC, a company wholly owned by the nonprofit, handles sponsorships and other business activity, and every dollar it earns stays with the nonprofit.
  • When a story involves a donor, sponsor or partner, we say so in the story.
  • When Guerrilla News or its staff take part in a lawsuit, petition or public meeting we cover, we disclose that role in the story.

Tools and AI

We use software, including AI tools, to sort records, transcribe meetings and draft summaries. A person on our staff reviews what we publish under our name.
