Petition basics
Voters propose a new law or ordinance. Enough valid signatures puts it before the voters or the governing body.
Voters challenge a law or ordinance the governing body already passed and send it to a public vote.
Under Article 2, Section 18 of the Oklahoma Constitution, citizens can petition to convene a county grand jury. The signature requirement runs from 500 to 5,000 depending on the county.
Where a city charter allows it, voters can petition to remove an elected official before the term ends.
Every petition has strict technical rules: the exact form, the gist, circulator requirements, signer information and deadlines. Use the official forms posted here without changing them, and read the instructions before you circulate. Questions? Ask for organizing help.
